Strata. A recent painting. Complex, layered, patterned. I love complexity in art and music and I was listening to music by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, specifically ‘As Wichita Falls, So Falls Wichita,’ which is such a sublime and visionary album with so many layers, soundscapes, rhythms, and moods. It helped me create this piece. I sort of describe this process or genre in painting as Abstract Decorative. It’s becoming more of a direction for me, and I feel more and more compelled to paint this way.

Explorations of the Wild Feminine. An Art Retreat

Such a transformative experience working with artist and amazing charismatic teacher Terre Cerridwyn Busse on an intentional creativity workshop on Explorations of the Wild Feminine at Cortijo Las Salinas in Jaen, in Spain. We painted, used guided meditation, explored wild nature, waterfalls, hiked mountains, experienced gong baths, yoga, flamenco, dance, a tour of Granada with writer Chris Stewart, poetry writing, sharing our stories in sacred women’s circles. With delicious nourishing food and deep connection, it was deeply revealing and moving in every way. I gave a class on the Landscape and the Sacred Feminine in Nature, after which some of us created land art mandalas. Some photos below.

Date: 18th October - 20th October 2019

Painting our Archetypes. We will begin with a introduction gathering, sharing our intentions for the workshop and paintings, followed by a gentle guided meditation. The workshop will be meditation through painting, as well as medicine for our psyche, delving into our unconscious to paint ourselves as we feel we deeply are on an unconscious level, as well as who we are or wish to be as our higher selves. We will be using symbols, words and intention as under-painting and then creating ourselves and that which we wish to manifest through paint and creativity.

‘Carl Jung understood archetypes as universal, archaic patterns and images that derive from the collective unconscious and are the psychic counterpart of instinct. They are inherited potentials which are actualized when they enter consciousness as images or manifest in behavior on interaction with the outside world. They are autonomous and hidden forms which are transformed once they enter consciousness and are given particular expression by individuals and their cultures. In Jungian psychology, archetypes are highly developed elements of the collective unconscious. The existence of archetypes can only be inferred indirectly from stories, art, myths, religions, or dreams.’ Ref: Wikipedia

UK retreats / workshops are available on a first come-first served basis and art tuition is one-to-one, or up to one-to-three. UK Art Retreats are at my home and studio in beautiful Pett Level, East Sussex, right by the sea and cliffs with views over the sea. Lovely walks can be taken along the Saxon shore way. The pre Raphaelites painted here. These UK retreats will be either weekend retreats and offered as smaller groups. We can accommodate up to three in a large shared room with views over the garden. It is incredibly peaceful and surrounded by trees, bird song and the sound of sheep and lambs across the countryside. The price will be £250 per person for a weekend retreat if you are coming alone, or £200 if sharing. This includes accommodation and all meals, art tuition from me and art materials. The weekend retreats will run from a Friday evening to a Sunday evening. I am also offering retreats for up to a week, and these will be £650 per person if coming alone or £600 if sharing. We can take trips out to see local cultural sights and interests and also walks in the beautiful countryside. Landscape painting is also an option. To secure any of these i will require a deposit of £200 for a week’s retreat and £100 for a weekend retreat. I am tailoring these retreats to suit individual needs and you can enquire as to which weekend you would like to stay and I will see what is available and possible. Explorations of the Wild Feminine, an Art Retreat.

What can I say about something so moving, so life-changing as this? It was more than an art retreat. Even in the intense heat of August in Jaen province, tucked away within the endless mountains of olive groves is Cortijo Las Salinas, a beautiful old farmhouse, lovingly restored and with Roman origins. Each room is carefully and thoughtfully considered, with beautiful views.

We had twice-daily circles, where we shared our truths in safety and love. We held space for each other. There were tears. As a woman who has many friends, I used to think this is something I frequently do, but it is not. Our lives are so busy and caught up in details. We are deeply private. Some things we never discuss. We talked about our lives and experiences as women. We shared so much as women’s lives often contain similar patterns, themes, paths. Terre read poetry, writings, thoughts. She held space in strength, love and vulnerability. We all wrote, we had guided meditations led by Terre, and these meditations informed our paintings. Terre guided us through the process of intentional creativity.

We painted every day, so in flow and reverence, to our work and all we had assimilated through our women’s circles, meditations and writings. Steffi taught us yoga in the mornings and performed gong baths, reciting poetry before and after. Oh my goodness, I have chills even thinking about those gong baths. The intense power of the sound of those gongs, within the mountains; rococheting, echoing, altering, cleansing, moving, shifting.. Steffi also held a Kundalini yoga class, chanting Adi Shakti while the full moon rose over the mountains.

There was so much laughter. The vegetarian food was nutricious and delicious. I gave a workshop of the landscape and the sacred feminine in nature. We walked with wonderful writer Chris Stewart in Granada, in some places I had never seen. Mysterious places, magical places. The home of Spanish composer Manuel de Falla was a delight. The day was blissfully cool as Granada in August, the heat can be fierce, but it was perfect.

Sometimes I had to escape from the group and walk to the top of the mountain behind the cortijo in early morning, to the Balcon de Don Rafael to take in the extraordinary, strangely Seurat-esque, pointillist olive-dotted vastness of the landscape for at least a hundred miles, or so it seems from up there.. I am a private person, and want to experience things alone sometimes, so in the cool of the early morning I made my way up to the top in slippy sandals, as the land was so dry it was sometimes like skating. Note to self: bring hiking shoes and/or poles next time.

After the retreat, many of us traveled together to Las Alpujarras mountains, slightly further south, and settled in Bubion, a high mountain white village, with water running from fuentes everywhere. The sound of water, the healing, life-giving vibration from it gave the village a cleansing feeling and we walked through labrynthine pathways, under tinaos, places built for shade, sat in cafes, walked up and down mountainsides. We walked from Ferreirola to Atalbeitar, stopping to drink from the gazeosa spring, with effervescent iron-rich water. Then to the incredible waterfall, the Salto de Paula, bathing in its freezing iron-rich waters. The heat was often intense and fierce. I often felt on the verge of heat-stroke, but learned somehow to temper it through soaking myself in cold water at any opportunity, and once after a particularly hot walk just threw myself into a horse trough surrounded by thirsty wasps, miraculously escaping their stings, and much to the bemusement of the village children.

We visited the Green Tara statue at the rarefied Buddhist Temple O Sel Ling, near Soportujar. The drive up there was hair-raisingly precipitous, on hairpin bends on narrow dirt tracks with no barriers. We climbed further still, to the Tibetan prayer wheels and prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. We chanted Adi Shakti together on the threshing floor (Era) at Ferreirola in front of the mountains. Three weeks I will never forget.
